SustainCERT accredited as a Designated Operational Entity under Article 6.4 of the Paris Agreement

We are pleased to announce that SustainCERT has been officially accredited as a Designated Operational Entity (DOE) for validation and verification activities under Article 6.4 of the Paris Agreement. SustainCERT is one of the first six entities to be accredited under the new Paris Agreement Crediting Mechanism, which has been created to operationalize Article 6.4.

Our Article 6.4 Accreditation Scope

SustainCERT is accredited to provide validation and verification services across the following sectoral scopes:

  • 1) Energy industries (renewable/non-renewable sources)
  • 3) Energy demand
  • 13) Waste handling and disposal
  • 14) Afforestation and reforestation
  • 15) Agriculture

Successful validation and verification will allow project developers to issue Article 6.4-certified carbon credits, ensuring their projects meet the high environmental and social integrity standards established by Article 6.4. For more information, find us listed on the UNFCCC website.

About Article 6.4

Article 6 of the Paris Agreement sets out how countries can pursue voluntary cooperation to reach their climate targets. It enables international cooperation to tackle climate change and unlock financial support for developing countries.

Under Article 6, countries can transfer carbon credits earned from the reduction of greenhouse gas emissions to help one or more countries meet their climate targets. Specifically, Article 6.4 establishes a new UNFCCC mechanism which can be used to trade high-quality carbon credits, known as the Paris Agreement Crediting Mechanism (PACM).

Organizations accredited for validation and verification, known under the framework as Designated Operational Entities (DOE), play two important roles:

  • Validate and seek registration for new activities or renew existing ones under the Article 6.4 mechanism;
  • Verify and certify emissions reductions of registered activities.

This process ensures that the emissions reduction efforts carried out within the framework of the Paris Agreement Crediting Mechanism are credible and reliable.
