Hitting The Right Target

A joint report from General Mills and SustainCERT introducing a new toolset to monitor annual land-use emissions at the supply shed level and support credible Scope 3 GHG accounting.

Why download this publication?

Scope 3 agricultural emissions are complex to measure and reduce, often relying on static default emission factors that lack precision. This publication presents a new monitoring approach designed to calculate a dynamic, supply shed-specific land-use emissions factor (EF) that reflects both land-based emissions and removals year-on-year.

It provides technically rigorous yet practical insights to help organizations:

  • Understand how supply shed monitoring can improve the accuracy of Scope 3 GHG inventories.
  • Learn how land-use EF data can inform mitigation strategies and science-based targets.
  • Explore the use of remote sensing (OpTIS) and biogeochemical modeling (DNDC) to track regenerative agriculture practices and soil carbon flux.
  • Assess how collective investment can turn land-use EF data into a public good for multiple supply chain actors.
  • Identify the challenges, limitations, and next steps for scaling this approach across agricultural sourcing regions.

Gain access to cutting-edge research on supply shed monitoring, and discover how more accurate land-use emissions data can strengthen corporate decarbonization strategies.
